Our Own Brand’s Renaissance

Our Own Brand’s Renaissance

We’ve undergone a bit of a brand renaissance as of late. I’m gonna talk a bit about that in this post, but first…

I hate yoga.

Of course, that implies I do yoga. And I do. Sometimes, I do yoga. There, I said it. Feel free to confiscate one of my man cards. Most of the time, I’m cool with yoga. It actually relaxes me. And therein lies the problem. There’s nothing worse than being calm and relaxed when one’s super jazzed about typing on something they’re especially geeked about.

But for you, the people, I shall power through!

Editor’s note: There was gonna be a pic of Dave, all relaxed and stuff after yoga, in this spot. But…he looked a little too relaxed.

The Renaissance of Mayniax Branding

When we started our sort-of humble branding biz in July of 2014, it was because we were sick of seeing entrepreneurs needlessly struggle, when we knew all they needed was a little brand strategy help to set them on the path to success. We wanted to help them live the lives they’ve dreamed of since starting their entrepreneurial enterprises. But man, you guys have crazy dreams!

Towards the end of 2015, we started seeing just how wonderful the entrepreneurs we deal with really are. We saw they had fantastic dreams! Benevolent dreams! These weren’t those evil rat-bastards we hear about, sitting in ivory towers trying to squeeze every last penny out of us. These are people who want to change the world for the better! These are people with dreams of housing the homeless, preparing high school kids for careers, and helping us all live healthier lives. And we started realizing, it’s not just about helping these people live their dreams. It’s about helping these people change the world! And it’s about helping them change a world that could do a helluva lot better than it’s doing now.

The Mayniax Branding Mission Statement(s)

Mayniax Branding - Our New Mission Statement

Our old mission statement read, “Our job is giving gutsy business owners and entrepreneurs a shot at better lives, and we brand the hell out of their businesses to make that happen.”

But with our newfound understanding of just how crazy you guys are, that wasn’t good enough. So, here’s the new one, “The world is broken. And we believe entrepreneurs are the only ones who can fix it. But they’ll never get that chance if no one cares about their brands. So, with a little bit o’ nuttiness, a little bit o’ research, and a lotta bit o’ guts, it’s our job to make people care.”

And don’t judge us because we haven’t updated the site, just yet.

The New Culture of Mayniax Branding

Mayniax Branding - More Passion. More guts. More caffeine.

If you’ve been paying attention to some of our other blog posts, or just know a little something about branding, you may be wondering how this will impact our culture. The short answer is, “It won’t.” The long answer is that we’re even more sure we’re doing the right thing for our clients, as well as ourselves. We’re even more passionate. We’re even more gutsy. And yes, we’re even a whole lot more caffeinated!

We aren’t, however, planning on writing anymore blogs after yoga.

Stay gutsy, gang!

Dear Entrepreneurs, the World Needs You!

Dear Entrepreneurs, The World Needs Your dreams!

Your dream is more important than you realize.

When Vanessa and I started Mayniax Branding, it was with the intent of helping gutsy entrepreneurs live their dreams. But man, we never anticipated the immense responsibility of that intent. Many of our clients have dreams built on benevolence. On helping others in a huge way. And it’s incredible.

We Can’t Rely on the Government

Mayniax Branding - You don't change the world in a voting booth. You change it by being gutsy.
I’m not a big fan of government. While everyone’s getting worked up about elections, I’m all like, “Who gives a crap?” It’s not that I don’t think people in government want to help. I actually believe they do – badly! The problem, to me, is that government’s no longer effective. There’s too much division, and too many rules, regulations, and lobbyists to affect any real change. Fortunately, that’s where you, the gutsy entrepreneur, come in.

We Can Rely on Entrepreneurs

Mayniax Branding - Entrepreneurship's not for sissies!
Almost every entrepreneur we come across, whether they’re clients or not, has the same passion: They want to help people. We work with one who wants to ultimately build training centers for homeless people so they can find jobs easier. We work with another who wants to help impoverished African-Americans realize their dreams are within their grasp. One of our business partners is in it to help high school students understand what it really takes to get hired, so they have a shot at living their dreams! We’ve worked with others who want to help people live longer, healthier lives through nutrition and exercise. Seriously, how cool are these people!?!

I don’t believe the government’s in a position to help, but the entrepreneurs I mentioned are. These are the people who have the power to change the world. They’re the people who get shit done. And they want to do it by making others’ dreams come true. Seriously, how cool are these people? And how cool are those dreams?

And I’m willing to bet you’re one of those entrepreneurs, too.

Mayniax Branding - Gutsy entrepreneurs run on passion and caffeine. Lots of caffeine.
Vanessa’s and my dream is to help entrepreneurs – you – live the lives you deserve. To stop you from settling. We could’ve done anything with that dream. We could’ve started with a gym or a restaurant that caters to entrepreneurs. We could’ve started with a salon that caters to entrepreneurs. We could’ve started with a design company, a photo company, or a coffee company that caters to entrepreneurs – after all, we do dig the caffeine. We could’ve started with any of those, but we didn’t. We started with brand strategy. We started with brand strategy because it’s the most important, most long-lasting thing you can do for yourselves, your businesses, your teams, and your clients. It’s the first step in making sure you don’t settle. The first step in making your dreams come true.

Because your dreams are too damned important to die.

Stay gutsy, gang!

A Brand’s Why & Meppy Chriswanzukah!

Your Brand’s “Why” & Meppy Chriswanzukah!

I’m in a good mood! As I type this, it’s 11:00 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, and I can’t help but smile. The reason’s simple: I’m thinking of the scene in Blues Brothers when Elwood’s driving through the mall.

Also, after a year-and-a-half, Mayniax Branding is starting to take off.

Some of the reasons for Mayniax Branding starting to take off are tactical: we do a lot of networking, we try to keep our social media accounts current, we write a blog and send out a newsletter every couple weeks. We always speak the same message and even hold workshops from time to time. But all those tactics are useless without our brand. And our brand is useless without our “why.”

Simon Sinek, the author of Start With Why, says, “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” He even did a great Ted Talk on the subject, where he talked about the “why” for Apple, the Wright Brothers, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Really, you’ll wanna check it out.

Why is a Brand’s “Why” Important?

Aside from Simon Sinek’s reasons, we’ve identified three of our own:
1. A powerful “why” will help you through the tough, very tough, times. Steve Jobs talked a little about it when he spoke on the importance of passion.
2. A powerful “why” will connect people with your brand, because your “why” is a unifying belief between your brand and potential clients.
3. A powerful “why” leads to a powerful brand culture. We always tell our clients their why leads to their passion, which leads to their mission, which leads to their culture. You can’t have a great brand culture without a great “why.”

Mayniax Branding believes your "why" leads to your passion, which leads to your mission, which leads to your culture.

When a Brand’s “Why” Isn’t Good Enough

We’ve also identified two reasons that don’t cut it when it comes to your “why”:
1. Because you like money! Honestly, that’ll never grab anyone’s attention, or even keep you going. I’ve facepalmed several times after hearing that one, and am pretty sure I’ll one day just get up and leave a meeting when someone says that. I won’t even give a reason. I’ll just get up, walk away, and bang my head on a wall.
2. You know how to do what you do! Now, that one seems counter-intuitive, because you should always know how to do what you do! That, however, can’t be the only reason. There must be something deeper to it. If there’s not, no one will ever care if they do business with you, or your competitor in the creeper van down the street. Because competitors work in creeper vans. Duh.

What’s the “Why” for Mayniax Branding?

We believe entrepreneurs are some of the gutsiest people on the planet, whether they know it when they start or not. And we believe they don’t deserve to lead the up-and-down lives most of them live. We believe they deserve better. Far better. The way we help them have a shot at those far better lives is by branding the hell out of their businesses. I personally believe this whole-heartedly, as my “why” – found on our About page – is the basis for Mayniax Branding.

Edit: Our “why” has changed ever so slightly, thanks to the current state of the world, and the insane dreams of our gutsy entrepreneurs! “The world is broken, and we believe only entrepreneurs can fix it.” You’ll find out more by clicking that About page link, just above this.

So hey, get your “why” ironed out! Make sure it’s real. Make sure it’s genuine. And most of all, make sure you’re not the competitor in the creeper van down the street.

Meppy Chriswanzukah and Joyous Festivus!

Every year, Vanessa and I put together a card for our contacts, clients, and even some friends and family. And every year, we put “Meppy Chriswanzukah & Joyous Festivus!” on it. We like “Meppy Chriswanzukah” because it’s both offensive and inoffensive at the same time, and we like “Joyous Festivus” because, well, Seinfeld.

Anyway, here’s the card:

Dave Murray & Vanessa Symington of Mayniax Branding wish you all a Meppy Chriswanzukah & Joyous Festivus!

With that, this is my last blog post for 2015. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the posts as much as I’ve enjoyed being a smartass while writing them! And remember, in typical less-than-smooth-segue fashion, we never charge for the first brand consultation, so if you’re in the Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti area, get a hold of us on our contact page, or simply email us at contact@mayniaxbranding.com. We want you to have the life of your dreams, and it’ll never happen without a quality brand. Or a quality “why.”

Or perhaps, a quality car with “…a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas.”

I don’t even know what that means.

Meppy Chriswanzukah, Joyous Festivus, Happy New Year, and of course,

Stay gutsy, gang!
