The world is broken, and we believe entrepreneurs are the only ones who can fix it. But they’ll never get that chance if no one cares about their brands. So, with a little bit o’ nuttiness, a little bit o’ research, and a lotta bit o’ guts, it’s our job to make people care!

We tell the world we do this so we can give entrepreneurs and business owners a shot at better lives. That’s very true, and here’s why:

“For years, my parents ran a cleaning company. Most of their business was through word-of-mouth, and it was feast or famine. My sister and I were enrolled in private schools, which obviously cost money, and we never knew just how bad it could be. Our parents always made sure we were taken care of, many times at their own expense. It was my great dream to retire them. When dad died from an aortic aneurysm in 2009, so did that dream.

“As silly as it sounds, I regret not having the knowledge then that we have, now. I know branding would’ve gone a long way toward making their business succeed. A successful brand would’ve led to a less stressful life.

“And with a less stressful life, maybe dad would still be alive today.

“In the years since, we’ve seen the same ‘feast or famine’ thing happen to those we’ve come to know as friends. Now, I’m over it. Now, as melodramatic as this sounds, helping entrepreneurs is personal.” -Dave

When we decided to do everything we could to help make entrepreneurs dreams come true, a funny thing happened: we realized those dreams are insane!

These aren’t those evil rat-bastards we hear about, sitting in ivory towers trying to squeeze every last penny out of us. These are people who want to change the world for the better! These are people with dreams of housing the homeless, preparing high school kids for careers, and helping us all live healthier lives.

Entrepreneurs are going to fix our broken world. And they’re going to need our help to do it. For us, branding isn’t just a fun way to pass the time, it’s a responsibility!

January of 2009 was a fateful month. That was the month Dave and Vanessa started working together. And what an unlikely path that was.

Dave was working as a contractor doing photo, design, and illustration work for two departments in the same company. It got to be too much for The Big Guy to handle. Following a somewhat heated exchange with one of the managers, Dave’s blunt style won the day, and he was told he could find someone to help him.

After a couple days of fruitless Facebook searching, Dave was frustrated and talking to his co-worker, Patty, about it. He’d worked with one of Patty’s daughters before, and asked if she could do the work. Patty told Dave she was too busy, but then Patty said, “My oldest daughter likes taking pictures.”

Her oldest daughter turned out to be Vanessa. And the rest is Mayniax Branding history in the making!

Dave and Vanessa found they got along considerably better than either one expected, despite Dave’s extreme nuttiness and Vanessa’s extreme practicality. Over the next eight months, they began developing an insane rapport that both entertained, and complemented, their styles. Then, a bomb dropped.

Dave’s dad, Ken, died of an aortic aneurysm in October, 2009. Dave and his dad were extremely close. His dad wasn’t just his dad, but also Dave’s mentor and best friend. And, as many people do following the death of someone remarkably close, Dave started evaluating where he was in life. He discovered he was bored and unhappy. He was ready for a change.

Dave asked Vanessa if she’d come with him if he left to start his own business. And she said yes.

They went out on their own July 12, 2010.

Dave and Vanessa started out doing what they’d done earlier: photography, graphic design, and illustration. Thanks to Vanessa’s strong business sense, they began networking and building a reputation in the Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti area. All was grand!

After a while, however, they realized they weren’t actually helping people with what they were doing. Dave and Vanessa would take turns asking each other why clients wanted things designed in ways that wouldn’t help them. They’d also take turns having to tell the other they’re graphic designers, and just needed to do what the clients wanted. It didn’t long before each one grew a bit agitated with the whole thing.

On a nondescript day in 2013, Dave and Vanessa were lamenting not being able to make a difference for their clients. Sure, they could make things look good, especially when a client was cooperative, but they also knew there had to be a better way to help entrepreneurs in the area. That’s when Vanessa said something that would change their lives:

“Dave, maybe we’re branders.”

Dave researched, and found, the best books he could on branding. And wouldn’t you know it? Just like Vanessa was right about them needing to get out and network, she was also right about this. As they poured over the books, and did their own research, one thing became crystal clear: Dave and Vanessa really were wired to be branders. It just took them a few years to figure it out.

Mayniax Branding™ officially launched on July 21, 2014.

  1. Your brand is the most important part of what you do. We’re lucky enough to be the only pure branding team in the Ann Arbor area. And since branding’s largely about focus, we think that’s kind of a big deal. Anyone who says they’ll do your branding, your advertising, your social media, your videography, and walk your dog, doesn’t really understand branding at all..
  2. We don’t target the huge businesses because we have no interest in helping the Fortune 500. We’re here to build the next Fortune 500.
  3. We’re able to do that with our progression pricing model. Other places want 50% upfront. Seriously? We don’t charge for our first hour, then we start you at an hourly rate until your ready to ramp it up. Obviously the faster the better for you and us, but the last thing we want is you digging through your couch cushions so you can afford to get some ramen. Because that’s no way to live! Unless you’re in college. Then it’s kind of a thing.
